Not really - think more of a 'self-defence' attitude.
Let's just think of this in basic terms, what actually happened. You're
sitting around with your neice in a quiet neighborhood. The previous nite
someone had been shot to death on the road by a few gang members (Even in
Salt Lake - true!)
You hear someone running around on the roof. (Actually, it wasn't that,
but assume it was.) As it happens, there is no phone connected in the
house at the moment.
OK - you're gonna go outside and investigate. (Your choice may be to sit
tight and do nothing, but lets say you go out to investigate.)
There's your old man's shotgun laying there, and you know how to use it.
So! Do you take the shotgun or do you just wander out without it?
>I've disagreed with JP on...well, on almost
>everything,
>but I'm really thoroughly disgusted by his attitude
>re: shooting people.

Oh well, I'm thoroughly disgusted by yours! You've said that if someone
killed your proverbial sister in front of your eyes, you would want to off
'em for about 90 seconds, then you would control yourself and call the
constabulary.
More seriously, why be "thoroughly disgusted" ... ?
I'm sure you consider yourself to have a very open, liberal, accomodating
attitude. Im sure if I declared "I only enjoy sex with small warm farm
animals" you response would be well that's his life and everyone is
different. How 'open' and liberal is your viewpoint if you are thoroughly
disgusted with my viewpoint? On a broader note, don't you agree that the
very 'liberal' attitude is often in fact the very dogmatic one that tends
to get thoroughly disgusted? If you want to sit on your ranch, and let
criminals wander in and kill you with no defence or response - that's
totally, completely OK with me. My view is "If Greg is a pacifist, that's
great for him." On the other hand, if I sit here on my ranch, and respond
with equal force or response to the proverbial criminal wander in - you
find that thoroughly disgusting. Your view is "If jp is not a pacifist, Im
thoroughly disgusted".
>JP obviously doesn't see himself as an executioner (even though
>his vigilante attitude indicates he considers himself qualified
>to be judge, jury AND executioner),
Not really. If I understand the word correctly a vigilate gets a posse and
goes and exacts revenge for some past misdeed.
The original discussion was about, whether, if you go outside to
investigate {what is quite possibly and armed and dangerous criminal type}
you defend yourself
>and I think he was responding
>more to your tone (i.e., the perceived negative connotations of
>"execute") than to the sense of your statements. So, by replacing
>the loaded term with a more neutral term, maybe he could see that
>you were making perfect sense.

not that it matters but - I was just complaing about Evan's assumption that
the only reason to CARRY a gun is to KILL someone.
For instance, a cop goes to arrest someone, takes a gun, but that doesnt
really mean his aim is to kill them. Makes sense?
>Doubt it worked, but I don't point out the inaccuracies of wackos
>like JP for their benefit, because I've never known anyone to
>change the mind of a gun fanatic. I respond because (as in my
>argument with Joshua) I think to let such crap pass uncommented
>upon is to allow it to grow in strength.
>
I'm as normal as they come, no gun wacko.
As I say ..
Not really - think more of a 'self-defence' attitude.

What;s your answer? Does it make you a gun wacko?
