Heh...try being a woman who plays role-playing games :) Not only do I get
looks of shock and surprise from the male-clientele of the gaming-shop
I frequent (if they don't know me), those looks of shock become more-so
when Ken (the gaming shop guy) addresses me as a regular, updates me
on the status of my orders, and talks to me about new gaming products, etc.,
as though I know what I'm talking about :>
For some reason they just can't believe that a woman plays "Shadowrun"
and AD&D, Magic:TG and Middle Earth, never mind that a woman has been
playing these style of games for the past 16 years :> It's so funny
to see the looks on kid's faces when, at a convention, some 17year old
know-it-all tries to "explain" the game to me when I stop to watch.
I smile, nod, and say, "I've been playing this game since you were in
diapers, dearie." It *really* shocked 'em when they realized (this past
weekend) that I wasn't a 'spectator' at the gaming tournament, but that
I was one judging/refereeing the whole shmoz. :>
I'm not sure why roleplaying games attract so many more men than women.
They don't *have* to be violent. They don't tend more towards either
the left or right brain (in fact, they're often more creative than
logical)...etc. In an RPG you can be or do anything. So, why?
(That was one of my potential thesis topics ;) (still is, I guess...for
a future thesis, at least, maybe a book. Hmm...)
Anyhow, Alex, I guess I'm just one of those women who has managed to
'break into' some of the traditionally male subcultures :> Gaming,
paintball, computers, comic books (I collected for 9 years), sci-fi,
fantasy...etc. :) I *look* like a woman, by my friend Ed (bestest
bud in the world) just cannot *see* me as a woman. To him, I'm
just "Deb". (one of the sources of my present difficulties with
my boyfriend...*sigh* It's not easy to *be* "one of the guys" and
*date* "one of the guys" at the same time. Paul isn't dealing with
it all that well...(babble...))
Anyhow, I'm wired, bored, and procrastinating (can you tell? ;)
I've gotta call my game-master (he left a message on my machine)
and see what he's got cooked up for my character this week ;)
have fun fun y'all...
Life is short! Have FUN! Don't let the assholes get you down.
Take time to smell the roses, remember what's important.
Perspective- use it or lose it. Etc (insert uplifting tripe
and cliches here).
The SUN is SHINING, and ALL is WELL!! (trust me...)
- Deb (raving slightly, cuz it looks like spring...woo!!)
