Have you heard of Ricochet modems? They are HOT out here, and provide a
solution to the dilemma posed above. Ricochet makes a wireless modem that
lets you, in most of the SF Bay Area, connect to the Net from wherever you
are. So you can juggle in the sunshine in Golden Gate Park, then take a
break by answering Greg, then go back to rollerblading. I went to a
daytime rave yesterday, at which folks would take time out from dancing to
send in messages to he rave list urging others to come out for music and
BarBQ, posting directions on how to get there, etc.
However, Greg's retreat may point to another future issue: do we at
times need to go cold turkey from the Net -- just leave it behind
altogether? I think so. I took a week vacation at Lake Tahoe, and found
that the interval gave me some new perspectives on the Net, and in
general gave me a week to sloooow doooooown.
However, I had to deal with 900+ messages when I returned. :<p
Still, I think that the idea of a media fast is a good thing: a period
of time without ANY media input whatsoever: no Net, no TV, no radio, no
newspapers. Just raw reality.
