Just to add my 0.02.

Being a computer professional doesn't always involve programming.
I don't know how to do any programming on anything but a C-64, but I
manage to freelance as a consultant (teaching people how to use the
computer they just got for Christmas, etc :) and as a desk-top
publisher. So far, I've only had a couple of jobs (school, oddly
enough, cuts into my time a great deal) but the jobs I've had have
paid $40/hr. I managed to get hired to consult for an ad-hoc women's
committee (doing a regional gov't study) just this past summer, and I
made $1200 in four weeks DTP'ing their FactSheet and setting up their
computer for word-processing and payroll. I worked, on average, 8hrs
a week, and they were more than happy to pay me $40/hr. They still
call me sporadically to fix things and teach them new stuff.

While programmers are needed, so are people to teach end-users how to
use the stuff the programmers develop :> I just work to keep my
skills current. (Right now, I'm learning CorelDraw 5.0 and Ventura,
etc :)
