One of the best ways, judging from the number of times the place I used to
work at had to change their combination, is to just hang around outside and
watch people come and go. Most people aren't too careful about making sure
that nobody sees them.

In other words, human essence - not human nature in general (which does not
exist) nor the sum total of qualities and shortcomings in the individual,
but the essence of who somebody is - can come into being only when life
departs, leaving behind nothing but a story.
