Speaking of "Re: Quebec", Michael New hath scrawled:

thanks, Mike, for your comments. (and Evan & Darren, too. I've enjoyed
reading yer posts & they've given me something to think about). I think
that your quote, above, is prolly the crux of the difficulty; that anglos
just don't understand the emotion that many quebecers feel about the whole
thing... that it's not _just_ money or _just_ this or _just_ that. It's
that _this_ place is _home_... and being a part of Canada has little or
nothing to do with that.

Things to fear in a separate Quebec:
* the creation of a police state
* elimination of all government services in english, including schools and
hospitals (what about Concordia and McGill universities, for example?)
* "war" between the police and the natives in 16 native communities in
northern Quebec
* "war" with any of the other 41 native communities inside Quebec?

Nevermind the possible (temporary?) economic setbacks: things are already
bad here in one extent or another and have been since most of industry's
money moved off to Toronto. Things may get worse, but the city, the
community, will still be here and will still have to eat and function. I
think Mike's right; setbacks would be temporary & things would level out
eventually.
