I always thought the idea was to respond with as much force as you
_have_ since you cannot truly ascertain the amount of force
necessary to end the situation permanently. There is another
viewoint, much better rooted in modern street survival. It goes
something like: "Inflict the most painful damage you can, and with
the distraction, make a hasty exit."

Does your teacher really expect you to figure out how much force is
necessary? Sounds hard to me. I guess you could classify the perp
by height, weight, age, training...well that could be tough, mental
state......well, you get the idea, it's pretty tough.....
