HELP! i haven't thought about Jimi Hendrix for years. as a matter of
fact, i didn't like his music.. or didn't really care. not at all.
he was just that crazy guy who played with his teeth, and set fire to
his guitar, and was the father of heavy metal, more or less, sort of..
then suddenly, his name started to pop up everywhere; several friends
of mine started talkin about Hendrix, i hear "Crosstown Traffic" on
the radio (first time in years), some guy mention his name at a
party, just in passing, just like Tony above.... and i start thinkin
things like: maybe it's time to go out and actually BUY something with
Hendrix, something besides the terrible jam-session recording i've
got, the one with a dead drunk Jim Morrison gurgling in the middle,
maybe i should really try to listen to Jimi Hendrix for the first time
in my life... and then i start to read Lewis Shiner's novel Glimpses,
it's about this guy that can hear all the great albums that never
were; Get Back with The Beatles, Celebration of the Lizard with The
Doors, Smile with the Beach Boys... nice book, really is, modern
fantasy about the 60s and about relationships.. give it a try!, ok,
point is that not only can he hear all these records, he can get 'em
on tape... and, ok, now here's the real point of this, the one he try
to get taped in the end, the one he can't manage to hear, is the one
Jimi Hendrix had started recording when he died; The First Rays of
the New Raising Sun. he, the guy in the novel that is, fails, he can't
get it together...... at that point i gave in, went out and got
myself Electric Ladyland... and i've been listnin' to it since (that
one and a recording of Bluebeards Castle by Bela Bartok...). in fact,
i played Voodoo Chile just minutes ago, before i decided to drop by
at work and check out the mail... and here's Tony: talkin about
Hendrix, well, ok, not really talkin about Hendrix at all, but still,
there he was again! i expect to hear and read a lot about hendrix
in the weeks to come....
and oh yeah, i d o like Hendrix. very, very much....
happy new year to all of you :-)
