Before Sweden was Christianized, there was an annual feast to mark the
winter solistice at the time when Christmas is now celebrated. The high
point of this festivity is December 24. Swedish Christmas custom are similar
to those of USA. But we, according to our tradition, celebrates on 24, xmas
eve.
On December 13 we celebrated Lucia. Lucia is an Italian saint and we are the
only ones that
celebrates her. And we are Protestants and not Catholics. Every town, every
school and else
where have their own Lucia that comes with a crown of candles in her hair
and wakes people up. I think we celebrates Lucia as a symbol of hope that
the light will return to Sweden after this long and winter darkness.
Merry Christmas
