I subbed to this list about a week ago, and I gotta step out of the

I agree that it's pathetic to believe in an afterlife, or anything
else for that matter, just because someone told you so, saying that
you'd "go to hell" if you didn't believe what their gang wants you
to believe. It's also pretty pathetic to believe in such things just
because it makes you feel better (on a superficial level).
However, one could argue that it's just as unhealthy to believe that
there *isn't* life after death, *without first investigating it
yourself*, using whatever means are available.
And whatever conslusion you have arrived at, bear in mind the
possibility that you might just be wrong. I don't know of anyone that
can speak with absolute authority about *anything*. When you laugh at
other people's beliefs, they might just have the last laugh.
