Do you need to be at your desk to work? I wanted to mention that there is a project in Seattle for a similar community. And the answer to Richard's question is NO, you don't have to be at your desk to work! To reduce congestion and pollution in Seattle from commuters, a living area/working area is being funded. Location is to be in the old industrial area of Seattle (sounds like it will be near where Survival Research Labs had their exhibition) and should be able to take advantage of the Seattle bus system for trips between home and work. I don't think this is a dorm setup - more like apartments. Everyone who lives there will be connected by a low-power cellular network. And everyone will have a personal phone number. So whether they're at home, at work, or on the beach with a lap-top, they'll be able to take calls, check voice mail, and link their computers to the network. McCaw Cellular has just made a contribution which meets the minimum requirements to get this project off the ground. Not surprising, since this will be a great research opportunity and possibly gain them exposure. I rarely read the paper, but this was a front page story... --- Brian Willoughby Software Design Engineer, BSEE NCSU BrianW@SoundS.WA.com Sound Consulting: Software Design and Development NeXTmail welcome _________________________________________________________________________ | | | That's all for today! | | To send a message to the list: future@nyx.cs.du.edu | | To subscribe/unsubscribe/change format: future-request@nyx.cs.du.edu | | All other requests: future-request@nyx.cs.du.edu | | List Maintainer is: (andy [aka hawkeye]) ahawks@nyx.cs.du.edu | |_________________________________________________________________________| | | | The opinions expressed in FutureCulture are those of the individual | | author only. | |_________________________________________________________________________|
